After a nearly 22-month construction period, the wait is almost over for the Kansas City metro to enjoy the new AdventHealth Sports Park at Bluhawk.
The state-of-the-art sports facility, designed and operated by nationally recognized Sports Facilities Companies, is set to open its doors to the general public on October 26 with a massive grand opening from 10 AM to 2 PM.
Bluhawk is the evolving Price Brothers development at 159th Street and Antioch Drive in Overland Park. It’s soon to be the go-to spot for shopping, dining, and sports. AdventHealth Sports Park at Bluhawk will be like no other place in the Kansas City metro area—or the region, for that matter.
ICE Time: Ground Level
The in-house hockey club, the Icehawks, will begin play this fall on the regulation NHL/NCAA sized rink. Registration is open and filling up fast for teams at the 6U through 14U in their first season.
“The Kansas City hockey community has eagerly awaited this moment for years,” says Simon Watson, the venue’s director of ice operations. “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to foster the growth of hockey and all ice sports for people of all ages, solidifying our reputation as the premier destination for active enthusiasts.”
In addition to serving as the home to the Icehawks, the venue will also be the home rink for KU Hockey Club this season, with 10 game dates. The facility will also serve as a competition site for other Kansas City Youth Hockey Association games and events.
Hockey is not the only activity that will be using the ice sheet, as the venue will be home to the Silver Blades Figure Skating Club and the Bluhawk Learn to Skate Academy, where skaters of any age can gain a strong foundation of skills needed to be successful on the ice in a safe and fun environment.
“This beautiful, state of the art facility is exactly what southern Johnson County has been missing,” says Kelsey O’Neill, the venue’s assistant ice director and head of figure skating. “This is going to provide current and future ice families with an amazing destination for all things ice related, and more. We will have something for everyone to enjoy, whether it’s your first time on the ice or you’re a seasoned pro, this will be the spot for you.”
The rink will also provide opportunities for adult hockey, Learn to Play, and public skate times throughout the year.
Fun on the Floor
From November through March, KC Power Volleyball will train and compete on four hardwood courts, while the other half of the 80,000-square-foot fieldhouse will support an indoor turf field, home to the KC Surf Soccer club. KC Surf will also train and hold small-side soccer tournaments during the five month period the surface is down.
After March, when the turf is removed, it will expose an additional four hardwood basketball courts to supplement the four year-round basketball courts. With two volleyball courts to one basketball court, this will increase the number of volleyball courts to 16.
The facility will have the flexibility to do more than just host athletic competitions. Officials look forward to the venue serving as an expansive event space for banquets, trade shows, and other special events.
Dining and Family Fun at AdventHealth Sports Park
A facility of this size will need to have food options to serve the hungry—and it does. The Elevate Grab-and-go Café will offer food and beverage options for a quick healthy snack or lunch. Upstairs, a bar and grill will offer elevated drinks and chef-prepared dishes.
Also located on the first floor is the family entertainment center. The center will have an 84-station arcade, a laser tag arena, an esports lounge, ten lanes of bowling, and sports simulators. The highlight of this space might be a motorized zip line known as a Roll Glider. This facility has something for virtually everyone.
