It’s about this time of year that we realize time sped up when we weren’t looking. Weren’t we just dying Easter eggs? Watching fireworks? Picking out pumpkins? Yes, we were, but now we’re here, an 11 in the month column.
A good way to slow it down is to embrace the time you’re in. Enjoy the fall air with your dog at Bar K. Go to the soccer game or the ice rink or the theater. There’s a lot to do, KC; pick an activity or two and pin yourself in time.
Edgar Allen Poe Speakeasy: Part II
Nov. 8-9
The Vox Theatre in KCK is hosting a four-part, four-cocktail event centered on the stories of Edgar Allen Poe.
At the Edgar Allen Poe Speakeasy: Part II (don’t worry, you don’t need to have seen part one), the traveling Poe Historians will read The Cask of Amontillado, Annabel Lee, The Pit and the Pendulum, and The Fall of the House of Usher. Each story will come with a cocktail, “each paired to enhance the haunting atmosphere of the story it accompanies.”
Tickets to the Friday and Saturday shows are $55. If you want to save some money, there’s a showing on Thursday for $48.
Crown Center Ice Terrace Opening
Nov. 8
After a week’s delay, the Crown Center Ice Terrace will open to skaters on Friday. Why not slip into some skates and fall on your butt for a night?
Entry is $9 for ages four and up, and skate rental is $6. If you think you’ll skate more throughout the season, consider a season pass for $130; it’ll get you unlimited entry until the season ends in March.
NWSL Quarterfinal: No. 4 Kansas City Current vs. No. 5 North Carolina Courage
Nov. 9
For the first time, the Current are hosting a playoff game at the beautiful CPKC stadium. They take on the North Carolina Courage at 11 a.m. on Saturday, and as of this writing, tickets are still available. If you want to go, you should jump on them; every Current game at CPKC Stadium sold out this season.
If they win, they’ll need to win just one more game to compete for the NWSL Championship on their home turf on Nov. 23.
Teal Tail-Gate Playoff Party
Nov. 9
Bar K, a two-acre urban dog park and bar, is right down the road from CPKC Stadium. While the stadium’s bumping, the tails will be thumping.
It’s the Teal Tail-Gate Playoff Party. At 9 a.m. on Saturday, bring the pup to Bar K for a $17 brunch buffet and drink specials. Come kickoff, the crew will turn on the Current game. You can stick around and watch the game or pay to leave your pup at the party (pre-register here) while you’re at the stadium.
At 2 p.m., there’ll be a three-hour post-game party with a DJ and a special teal cocktail.
Peak season is officially over at Bar K, so entry is $10 for your first dog and $5 for each additional dog. Plus whatever your dog insists you get them from the dog menu.
Nutcracker by Grand Kyiv Ballet
Nov. 10
If you’ve never seen a ballet performance, the Grand Kyiv Ballet’s performance of The Nutcracker this weekend would be an interesting first.
The ballet’s founders and principal dancers Kateryna Kukhar and Alex Stoianov evacuated their two children from Ukraine three days after Russia’s 2022 invasion and have helped 200-plus dancers evacuate the country since. Today, they consider their performances a “cultural frontline.”
The Grand Kyiv Ballet performs The Nutcracker Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Folly Theater. Grab tickets here.
