Making a magazine like this sends our team all over the metro. So each month, we weigh in on our favorite local… something.
This month, we’re talking desserts. Sweet dishes we would exclusively leave the house for—and oh, we have.
Why settle for a single layer of cake when you can indulge in 32? One of the best desserts in Kansas City is the Signature 32 Layer Chocolate Cake from Silo Modern Farmhouse. This towering treat features 32 layers of rich chocolate. It’s topped with decadent chocolate ganache and drizzled with an irresistible amarena cherry chocolate sauce. As if that’s not enough, it’s served with vanilla whipped cream and garnished with crunchy chocolate and burnt-sugar lace. It’s a chocolate lover’s dream come true.
I’m a big fan of doughnuts, and the house doughnuts at Tavern in the Village and Tavern at Mission Farms are no-nonsense, old-school sugary goodness that I love to order anytime I go. They never disappoint!
I’m not really a dessert person, but Fairway Creamery is too close to my house to pass up sometimes. Their flavors change regularly, so I get something different every time. The Persian Rose Pistachio was amazing.
There might be more sophisticated desserts in Kansas City, but I apply Marie Kondo’s advice to desserts; Does it bring me joy? The honey toast at I Am Frozen Dessert Cafe brings me joy.
Just look at it. It’s a big, warm cube of toast covered in honey, ice cream, and plenty of other goodies, depending on your order. Get it with a fellow sweets lover—really, I highly doubt you’ll finish it by yourself—and enjoy the experience.
If you’re a long time Kansas Citian, or even new to the city, you’ve probably heard of Betty Rae’s. It’s an iconic spot in Kansas City, with traditional flavors and a ton of fun ones, like Chiefs Cake or Joe’s Burnt Ends. My go-to dessert and favorite flavor at Betty Rae’s is the Cereal Milk ice cream. Best served in the warm, fresh waffle cone. It’s both nostalgic and delicious!
