With St. Patrick’s Day approaching, it’s time to get a lay of the land. Kelly’s Westport Inn, O’Dowd’s Gastrobar, Conroy’s Public House, and more—each pub is evocative of those on the Emerald Isle but with an identity all its own.
Let’s take a quick tour of Kansas City’s Irish pub scene.

Browne’s Irish Marketplace
When you walk into Browne’s Irish Marketplace, it might not strike you as a bar, but it’s hiding in plain sight. Mixed into the market are Guinness taps, shelves of whiskey, and spots to sit and chat. The same Irish-American family has sat at the helm for four generations.
Out beyond its maze of back rooms full of Irish-made products, Browne’s has a massive backyard that hosts live music. Music and conversation are two keys to an authentic Irish bar, says co-owner (and great grandson-in-law of the original owners) John McClain.

Conroy’s Public House
You’ll find several Conroy’s Public Houses across Johnson County—two in Overland Park, one in Leawood, and one in Westwood. Each has a charming exterior, a hefty food menu, and service that customers rave about.

The Craic
It’s no surprise that John McClain at Browne’s personally recommends The Craic; this little pub on Main Street in Parkville is named after the Irish slang term for lively conversation. Enjoy Irish food and Guinness galore in a too-cute downtown.

Gaels Public House & Sports
Gaels Public House & Sports is a brick building near UMKC that’s decked out in murals. It has a nice patio, an extensive food menu (including wagyu beef burgers topped with pimiento-y pub cheese), and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Kelly’s Westport Inn
Kelly’s Westport Inn is a gigantic, ramped space full of dark wood and bright conversation. During the day, it’s a Cheers-like gathering spot; on game days and weekends, things get a little rowdier. No matter the time, expect sports on the TVs, great beer options, and a built-in deli.

O’Dowd’s Gastrobar
O’Dowds, with its striking, carved wood exterior, is a staple on the Country Club Plaza. It has an extensive drink menu, lovely rooftop dining, and live music every day.
