We’re approaching the last weekend before winter, Kansas City. Make a toast to the season that was and prepare for the one coming with the following activities.
The Fairy Princess at Kansas City Museum
Dec. 13-15
In 1935, Kline’s department store in downtown KC introduced Kansas City’s children to the Fairy Princess. Kids trusted her with their holiday wishes until Kline’s closed in 1970. The Kansas City Museum picked up the tradition in 1987, and Thursday through Sunday, you can bring the kiddos to the museum’s Betty Milbank Waldrop Salon to continue it. For $15, kids get a gift, a snack, and a printed photo with the Fairy Princess.
North Pole Acres
Dec. 13-15
If you’re used to driving west (or back east) on I-70, you’ve surely seen North Pole Acres in Oak Grove. Most of the year, it’s a confusing maze of metal—but right now, it’s a lovely drive-through holiday lights experience with coordinated music on 87.9 FM. Unlike other experiences in this vein, it’s far away from city lights, and it feels like there’s nobody else in the world but you and those rolling through with you.
North Pole Acres is open every night until the beginning of January, but you might beat the holiday rush if you go soon. It’s $20 per car (or $40 per commercial vehicle), and you can drive through twice.
Rezound! Holiday Handbell Concert
Dec. 13-15
We’ll bet you’ve never seen a handbell concert. Now’s the time!
Rezound! Handbell Ensemble is a 16-musician group that performs handbell arrangements throughout and beyond the metro. This weekend, they’ll ring out holiday concerts in Blue Springs, Richmond, and Olathe—no tickets necessary. The Friday show will also be available via live stream.
See the full schedule for times and venues.
SantaCon Bar Crawl
Dec. 14
Looking for something a little wilder? SantaCon KC is a bar crawl that sets out from Westport on Saturday. Dress as Santa and head to Kelly’s Westport Inn between 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. At 6 p.m., drink-packed party busses will take you to participating bars in Waldo and Martini Corner. The afterparty is at OffKey karaoke lounge back in Westport.
Tickets are $60 for individuals or $60 per person in a ten-person group. Just make sure you have someone responsible fly your sleigh home.
Note: A previous version of this section linked to a different event. This is a much better deal.
Tivoli Presents: White Christmas
Dec. 15
Cap off your weekend with a showing of the 1954 film White Christmas in Atkins Auditorium at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Tickets to Tivoli Presents: White Christmas are $13 ($10 for members) plus fees, as there are three different “graze box” options for food.
