Reagan Bachus is a design consultant with California Closets Kansas City. Her organized life started when she was 12, building her own closet out of scrap wood. As she grew, she helped friends and family organize their homes. As a college student, she started her own organization business. And after graduation in 2017, she signed on with California Closets—first in Denver, and then here—designing custom spaces and better lives for her clients.
Your organized life starts with a free consultation. A design consultant at California Closets Kansas City comes to your home and gets to know you. Your lifestyle, your space, your inventory, and your budget. Then, with you at their side, they’ll design a fully custom closet in an interactive 3D CAD computer system that shows how each element—and alternative—affects the price. When it’s just right, it’s on to installation, and finally, the lasting impression.
Bachus has a lifetime of experience helping people get organized. She shared her tips on creating a more organized life—and how California Closets can help—below.
1. Take out all your items and do a deep clean of the space.
If you want to organize your belongings, one of the first steps is to take them from your closet and examine the space.
For Bachus’s clients, this happens virtually first, and then just before installation.
“You’re taking everything out of that space, and then you have this beautiful new closet to put your items back in,” says Bachus. “So you get your new closet and you’re putting things back, and you are clearly able to see how much more functional the space is.”

2. Ask yourself, does this bring joy? Does it fit well?
Ah, this philosophy never ages. But Bachus knows determining what belongs is a personal process. She’s happy to simply create a space for it.
“I enjoy designing closets more than when I had my organization business,” says Bachus. “Because telling people to get rid of things is hard, but giving them the systems to stay organized is gratifying.”
These systems can include accessory drawers fit to your inventory; boot compartments measured to the height of your tallest boot; and custom shelves for shoes, jewelry, handbags, and folded clothing.
“In the design consultation, I take inventory of your items and create a custom design for your items and space,” says Bachus. “You will now have a dedicated space for each type of clothing and accessory.”

3. Make sure all of your clothes are facing the same direction and use space-saving velvet hangers.
We go into our closets a lot—sometimes three times a day, Bachus says. Smoothing out the little things cultivates a calm life.
“Our standard shelf depth is 14 inches, and we know a folded piece of clothing fits on that,” says Bachus. “A lot of closets, if a builder does it, might be 11 inches, and clothing will fall off the shelves. It’s reassuring to work with a company that has 45 years of experience and knows what will work well.”
Bachus recommends keeping your clothes facing the same direction and arranging them by sleeve length and color. Adding low-profile velvet hangers fits a lot of clothes without clutter.
4. Rotate your wardrobe seasonally.
Another way to smooth out your day? Keeping your closet in season. No more short sleeves in winter or woolens in summer getting in the way.
“You can store out-of-season clothing above the closet in bins, in a storage room, or in a guest room closet,” Bachus says.
It’s all about creating calm. Deciding what belongs and, most importantly, having a place to put it. This not only goes for your closet but also your pantry, garage, craft room, linen closet, kids closets—all spaces California Closets specializes in.
