Kansas City’s premiere high school singing competition is returning for its 15th year. The competition is reminiscent of American Idol, as young singing talents will audition next month for a chance to compete for a $10,000 scholarship.
KC SuperStar is produced annually by The Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City and is the organization’s largest fundraiser. Students from all backgrounds singing any genre of music are welcome. The preliminary auditions will be held March 3 and 7 at The J. Judges include Tammy Ruder, KC SuperStar producer and director, vocal coach Lisa Burns, multi-genre vocalist Kristen Satterwhite, and singer and songwriter Byron Hyde, who was also a past KC SuperStar finalist. “We encourage anyone who enjoys singing to audition,” says Ruder. “We provide vocal coaching and more to our participants. Every year, we watch incredible growth from the first audition to the last performance, and it’s always impossible to guess who our winner will be.”
Singers who make it through the auditions and semifinals can expect to perform at the KC SuperStar finals in August at Johnson County Community College’s Yardley Hall. Every year, KC SuperStar provides over $22,000 in scholarships to their top ten finalists. Though the first-place winner is awarded the $10,000 prize, every finalist is given at least $500. The fundraiser doesn’t just support the student performers but serves as a fundraiser for many members of the J, offering support to the Child Development Center and The Reat Griffin Underwood Rising Stars Fund.
