The American Jazz Museum is one of a kind. The only museum in the world with a singular focus on the preservation, exhibition, and advancement of jazz music, its celebration of jazz as an original American art form has made it one of the city’s most beloved and historical landmarks. On January 1, Dina Bennett, Ph.D., stepped into the role of executive director.
Bennett is a veteran ethnomusicologist who specializes in African American music and culture. She has a background of extensive curatorial work in music museums and exhibition design and has served as the museum’s interim executive director since August.
Local leaders were vocal in their support, with Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II, saying, “Dr. Bennett’s wealth of experience and dedication to preserving the rich tapestry of African American music and culture align perfectly with the mission of the museum. I am confident that under her leadership, the American Jazz Museum will continue to thrive and captivate audiences.”
Bennett’s academic work and history of dedication to the preservation and celebration of jazz history make her uniquely qualified to lead the museum’s mission. “It is a tremendous honor for me to lead this beloved and historic institution,” said Bennett. “My doctoral thesis examined the American Jazz Museum and the many complexities in representing various perspectives about what story of jazz to tell, how it should be told, and who should tell it. I believe that exploration brings me closer to our museum visitors, ensuring we have something for everyone.”
