Ahhh, Memorial Day Weekend—the fabulous three-day kickoff to summer. If you’re as ready as we are to usher in sun and fun, here’s what’s going on in our fair city.
Up, Up and Away
Bring on the helium—there’s a delightful new display being held on the lawn of the National WWI Museum and Memorial. It’s Kansas City’s inaugural Great Balloon Glow, a collection of hot-air balloons resting on the museum’s grounds for the evening. It promises a colorful and illuminating display as the sun goes down.
Everyone is invited to this free event. Plus, kick off the summer season with bites from local food trucks and area vendors organized by Strawberry Swing beginning at 6 p.m. The Great Balloon Glow will begin on Sunday evening around sundown at 8:30 p.m.
Immerse Yourself
Speaking of the National WWI Museum, it’s offering a lineup of events and activities to pay homage to Memorial Day. Veterans and active-duty members of the military receive free admission, while the public only pays half price. And opening May 27th, the museum will debut an immersive new experience just in time for the weekend. War Remains will offer guests a virtual-reality experience that offers a snapshot of the Western Front of WWI from a soldier’s point of view.
Game On
If you’re up for it, you can spend the entire weekend rooting for Kansas City’s hometown teams. Kansas City NWSL’s inaugural season continues as they duke it out against the Chicago Red Stars on May 26. Meanwhile, the Kansas City Monarchs play their third home series of the season at Legends Field and Children’s Mercy Park, May 28 – 30. Sporting Kansas City takes on the Houston Dynamo on May 29. And—batter up!—our beloved Kansas City Royals begin their series against the Pirates starting on Memorial Day.
Do the Zoo!
A crowd favorite, the Kansas City Zoo always has family-friendly events on their calendar. Through November you can holla at the koalas—as a pair of visiting koala bears will be greeting guests. Say hello to Chuckels and Thackory!
Adrenaline Up
If you’re ready to get your thrill on, Worlds of Fun opened for its season just last weekend. Oceans of Fun returns on May 29th with a new addition, Riptide Raceway—the world’s longest mat-racing water slide. Get ready to make a splash!
