McKenzie Stanley has been mugging people for about four years. The ceramics artist introduced her quippy “quote mugs” when she was living in Los Angeles. “I started making a couple of mugs that would say something funny like ‘this might be wine.’ They were always the first thing to sell,” she says. “I would get inspiration from shirts in stores or asking friends what they think would be funny or inspiring on a mug and just kind of went from there.”
Now Stanley has landed in KC and her zingy, hand-painted coffee mugs are in demand. Seems her witticisms are catching the eye of local retailers (and customers) who like her sassy coffee cup slogans. “They are usually my sayings, but sometimes I do logos or work with the company to make something that fits their shop,” says Stanley, who also teaches ceramic classes at her Driftwood Ceramics studio in North Kansas City.
Prices from $20-$25 per mug—but let’s face it—you can’t put a price on clever cuppas, can you? Find them at a variety of local digs—including Made In KC, the Bunker, and Westside Storey. Or order online at msgpottery.com.
